Real Madrid took a valuable 2-1 lead in the away leg at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich. The defending champions Madrid also have two valuable away goals. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace to mark 97 goals in the Champions League for the Portuguese forward.
Vidal- From Hero To Zero
Arturo Vidal gave Bayern the lead with a bullet header in the 25th minute. The Chilean dominated the midfield alongside Xabi Alonso and was a standout performer. The tables turned in the 45th minute when he skied a penalty which would have doubled Bayern’s lead. The penalty itself, which was harsh on Dani Carvajal, was awarded after a handball. Vidal fired over which proved to be costly.
Martinez Sent Off
Bayern largely dominated the first half. This changed when Javi Martinez was sent off for two bookable offences in quick succession. The Spanish center half fouled Cristiano Ronaldo minutes after fouling him and being booked. He was given his marching orders by referee Nicola Rizzoli. This changed the momentum in Real’s favor.
Neuer Keeps Bayern In The Tie
Manuel Neuer was vital in limiting the damage after Martinez’s red. The German custodian was immense, saving a series of attempts from the likes of Bale and Benzema and putting in a Man Of The Match Performance. Bayern can still overturn the deficit and have Neuer to thank for remaining in the tie.
