Arsenal took 3 points at the Riverside Stadium thanks to goals from Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. Arsenal also lined up in a 3 formation.
Change In Tactics
Arsenal have conceded far too many goals in recent weeks. Wenger decided to shift his defense to a 3 at the back. Gabriel, Koscielny and Rob Holding lined up in defense as a part of the trio. Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Monreal were the right and left wing-backs respectively. This was the first time Wenger has used such a system in his 20 years in charge. The system worked well for most of the game providing the Gunners with solidity. Whether Wenger decides to continue with the system remains to be seen.
Mercurial Sanchez At It Again
Alexis Sanchez scored a brilliant free-kick around half-time to give Arsenal the lead. The Chilean has had an exceptional season and Arsenal’s priority should be to get him to sign a new contract. Alexis also enjoyed a lot of freedom in Arsenal’s new system and was all over the pitch. It was an excellent performance from a man who’s looked drained in recent weeks.
Rob Holding Slots In Comfortably
Rob Holding lined up in defense for Arsenal. While inexperienced, the young Englishman has shown composure and skill to perform whenever given the chance. Given Calum Chambers’ impressive season for Boro, the possibility of both Holding and Chambers having bigger roles next season seems possible. Holding’s proving to be another well scouted signing by Arsenal.
Chamberlain’s Versatility
Alex Oxlade Chamberlain has been a bright spark in what’s been a difficult period for Arsenal. Chamberlain impressed in a central role in the past few games. Against Boro he was given the role of right wing-back which he executed to perfection. Powerful and pacey, Chamberlain looked right in place and proved to Wenger why he should be an assured starter when in form. Chamberlain’s versatility now ranges from winger to central midfielder to wing-back.
Arsenal may not be able to achieve their customary top 4 finish but exhibited a new system at Middlesbrough which showed positive signs. Boro on the other hand seem destined to be playing in the Championship next season.
