Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid: Pre-Match Analysis

Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid: Pre-Match Analysis

Atletico Madrid travel to Leverkusen to face Bayer in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie. Leverkusen made a shaky start to the season but managed to get out their group with a win over Spurs at Wembley. Bayer have won their last 2 league games and 4 of their last 5 at home. They were unbeaten at home in the group stage this season. Roger Schmidt’s side are built on a solid defensive formation with the highly-rate Jonathan Tah at the heart of the defence. Javier Hernandez will lead the line but playmaker Hakhan Calhanoglu is suspended for the season. Both teams have scored in Bayer’s last 4 home matches and in 4 of their last 6 more generally.

Atletico under Diego Simeone have lost in the Champions League final in 2 of the last 3 seasons. This season Atletico have been a bit sluggish and not as defensively solid as they have in previous years. They sit 4th in La Liga but they did top their group which included Bayern Munich. Atletico have improved in recent weeks and have lost just 1 of their last 10 and are unbeaten in their last 8 away matches. This suggests that Simeone’s men are back to their tough to beat best. Atletico won 2 of their 3 away group games, both to nil, all 3 of their group away matches had Under 2.5 goals.

It is difficult to assess goals in this one, with Leverkusen games tending to favour goals while Atletico have established themselves as a team who pride themselves on defensive solidity over the past 3 seasons. Oblak and Juanfran are big misses for Atletico, Moya and Vrsaljko have deputised however Moya was unconvincing against Celta. Atletico are 13/8 to win this and this seems a long price given the calibre of player they possess and their achievements in recent years. Atletico to win to nil at 3/1 is also a noteworthy bet given both their away group wins came to nil while all 3 of their away group games failed to see both teams score.
