Leicester v Liverpool: Pre-Match Analysis
This week has been an eventful one for Leicester. The Premier League Champions were valiant in a 2-1 defeat in Seville on Wednesday and yet on Thursday evening they announced the sacking of Claudio Ranieri. Craig Shakespeare takes charge this evening and it is likely the Leicester players will be fired up and revitalised with reports of a revolt against Ranieri. Leicester slipped into the drop zone this weekend with Crystal Palace picking up a win against Middlesbrough and have been in woeful form of late. The Foxes have lost their last 5 Premier League games, all to nil and by a margin of 2 goals or greater in 4 of those 5. Liverpool press high and will leave space in behind for Jamie Vardy to run into, this could play into Leicester’s hands, as was the case against Man City at the King Power in their 4-2 victory.
Liverpool ended a run of 1 win in 10 games with their victory against Spurs last time out. Liverpool are rested after having no FA Cup fixture next weekend although Captain Jordan Henderson is rumoured to be out. Both teams have scored in 4 of Liverpool’s last 6 and in the absence of Dejan Lovren, Lucas is likely to fill in at the back. Liverpool are 3 away games without a win. Sadio Mane returned from the African Cup of Nations against Spurs and scored a brace on his return.
There seems little value in backing either side outright, 8/13 seems a bit short for a Liverpool side who have a shock loss in them, notably away to Burnley (not so outrageous in hindsight!), Bournemouth and Hull this season. Leicester are 4/1 but it is difficult to justify backing them at the price, regardless of events this week. Both teams to score at 8/11 seems a better bet, as does both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 6/5. Liverpool are leaky at the back and in the absence of Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson, Leicester may profit. Liverpool have scored the 2nd most goals in the league, having played a game less than Chelsea and have fired blank just twice in their last 9 away games. Prices for Liverpool’s goalscorers seem very slim however Jamie Vardy at 3/1 to score anytime seems an appealing price. Vardy benefitted from Man City’s high line at the King Power in December, scoring a hat-trick and his late goal against Sevilla means we could see him end his recent run of devoid of confidence performances.
