FC Rostov v Man Utd: Pre-Match Betting Analysis
FC Rostov host Manchester United at 6pm this Thursday in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16. Rostov have impressed me this season, although they failed to progress from their Champions League group they beat Bayern Munich at home and lost to Atletico Madrid both home and away by a single goal margin. The Russian side dispatched of a tricky Sparta Prague side 5-1 on aggregate in the last round after blowing them away 4-0 in the first leg. Russia is a notoriously hard place for teams to travel in Europe and Rostov will make things difficult in this hostile atmosphere. Rostov have lost just one of their 17 home games in all competitions this season.
Jose Mourinho has indicated his intent to win this competition with the calibre of line up he has fielded thus far. Man Utd beat Saint-Etienne 4-0 on aggregate to reach this stage but did lose two of their three away matches in the group stage. Zlatan Ibrahimovic will start here after picking up a 3-match retrospective domestic ban for an elbow on Tyrone Mings. United face Chelsea in the Quarter-Final of the FA Cup on Monday evening so Mourinho will use his squad here while keeping a solid core.
Rostov will look to utilise home advantage and take a lead to Old Trafford while I’m sure they will keep things tight. United are tough to beat under Mourinho whatever the competition, they have lost just 1 of their last 27 which was the second leg of an EFL Cup tie which they progressed through. I did toy with Under 2.5 goals but Rostov certainly have goals in them, they scored four here versus Sparta Prague in the last round and put three past Bayern Munich at home in the Champions League group stage. It is difficult to see the Russian side frustrating United over the 90 minutes especially with Zlatan Ibrahimovic leading the line. As a result of this, I am happy to take the above evens offered on both teams scoring.
