Newcastle v Aston Villa: Pre-Match Analysis

February 19, 2017Leave a commentFootball Tips Today, PreviewBy Michael

Newcastle v Aston Villa (20:00, 20/02/17, Sky Sports One):

Newcastle have a chance to go back to the top of The Championship with a win here. The Magpies drew in midweek away to Norwich and are unbeaten in 5 league games. Benitez’s team have won 3 of their last 4 at home but interestingly have only won 3 of their 6 home games against teams below 15th in the table. Dwight Gayle is the league’s top goalscorer with 20 goals but Matt Ritchie, Ayoze Perez, Alexander Mitrovic, Jonjo Shelvey and Yoan Gouffran have all scored 4 or more goals this season. Newcastle’s last 4 league goals have all been scored by different goalscorers.

Despite hefty spending in January, Aston Villa have lost 6 of their last 7 league games including each of their last 4. Villa have also won just 1 of their last 9 away games while 6 of their last 7 away losses have come to nil. In January, Steve Bruce’s side brought in record signing Scott Hogan alongside midfielders Conor Hourihane, Henri Lansbury and Birkir Bjaranason as well as defender James Bree. Things seem yet to click for Steve Bruce at Villa despite a 7 game unbeaten run early in his tenure, they have lost all 4 games since the close of the January transfer window. 7 of Villa’s last 9 away league games have had under 2.5 goals.

There are two potential bets which I like the look of in the one. Newcastle have had 5 or more corners in 11 of their last 12 home matches. Villa have had 5 or more corners in 4 of their last 5 away games and have conceded 5 or more corners in each of their last 4 away trips. Each team to have 5+ corners is 15/8 and looks a good price with this considered. Moreover, Newcastle/Newcastle in the Half-Time/Full-Time market is 17/10 and looks a possible good value bet. Newcastle have scored first (and in the first half) in each of their last 6 league games and were leading at half time in 6 of their last 7 home wins.
