Burnley v Lincoln City Pre-Match Analysis

February 17, 2017Leave a commentFootball Tips Today, PreviewBy Michael

Burnley v Lincoln City (12:30pm, 18/02/17, BT Sport 2):

Burnley host Lincoln in the 5th round of the FA Cup. Burnley have won 7 of their last 8 home games in all competitions, with the dropped points coming last weekend in a 1-1 draw with league leaders Chelsea. Burnley have become renowned for their home form this season and boast the 3rd best home record in the Premier League. Burnley’s last 4 home wins have been to nil including their 3rd and 4th round ties against Sunderland and Bristol City which were both won 2-0. This reflects Burnley’s solid defensive foundation as they line up with two banks of four. This draws appeal to Burnley in the ‘Win to Nil’ market, but it seems a tad short at below Evens. Having watched Burnley on numerous occasions this season, I have been impressed with numbers they get in the box and the number of early crosses the full-backs provide. With no game for 7 days, it is likely Sean Dyche will go relatively strong again with a few fringe players coming in. Sam Vokes has scored first in both of Burnley’s FA Cup games so far this season. Vokes is best priced to score first at 15/4 with Bet 365, Evens to score anytime and is 5/4 with Ladbrokes to score in a Burnley win. Vokes has been behind Barnes and Gray in the pecking order in recent weeks and will be keen to impress. If you’re looking for a goalscorer angle, Vokes is certainly a good bet. Burnley can be found at 1/3 with various to win this tie while Burnley -1 is 10/11, 3 of Burnley’s last 5 home wins have been by 2 or more goals. Burnley average 4.5 corners per home game (in the Premier League).

Lincoln have reached this stage in spectacular fashion, getting past League One Oldham in the 2nd round, beating Ipswich at home in a 3rd round replay and then overcoming Brighton 3-1 at home in the previous round. Lincoln come into this in good form, having won 7 of their last 8, losing just 1 of their last 10 and sitting top of the National League. What has been most notable about The Imps is the football they play, Danny Cowley has his team comfortable in possession yet not afraid to look for target man Matt Rhead. Since the 4th round victory, Theo Robinson has departed the club for Southend and his running in behind will be a big loss, having bagged 4 goals in Lincoln’s last 4 FA Cup games. It is likely Danny Southwell will replace Robinson. Southwell was brought in on loan from Wycombe and did score on his debut away to Welling in the FA trophy. Wingers Nathan Arnold and Terry Hawkridge are key to Lincoln’s play while Sean Ragget and Luke Waterfall provide a solid defensive core. Both teams have scored in 11 of Lincoln’s last 13 away matches, with The Imps firing blank just once in that period. Both teams to score is 4/5, both teams to score and Over 2.5 goals is 6/4 with Coral. In a one-off cup tie Lincoln will certainly leave nothing behind and if Dyche does opt to change his back four, both teams to score could prove a shrewd bet. Lincoln are 11/1 to win while The Draw can be found at 5/1 with Betway.
