Middlesbrough v Oxford United: Pre Match Analysis
Middlesbrough have reached this stage winning both of their previous ties without conceding a goal. Boro are yet to win a league game in 2017 and are 8 games without a win although they have kept 5 clean sheets in that 8 game period. Frustration at the Riverside has been growing in recent weeks, with fans unhappy with Aitor Karanka’s negative and patient style of play. At home, Boro have kept 5 clean sheets in their last 7. In the FA Cup this season, Karanka has tended to keep his strong defensive base while tinkering with attacking options so it is possible the likes of Gestede, Bamford and Downing will get minutes. Middlesbrough are best priced to win this at 8/15 with Betfair but are 13/10 to win to nil and I think this is definitely where the value lies in this one. Alternatively, Middlesbrough -1 handicap is 7/5.
Oxford have been on a decent run themselves, winning 5 of their last 6. To reach this stage, Oxford have twice overcome Championship opposition, winning 3-2 at Rotherham before comfortably beating a much changed Newcastle 3-0 at The Kassam. Away from home Appleton’s men have lost just 1 of their last 9, with 5 of their last 6 away games having Over 2.5 goals. Over and Under 2.5 goals are split at 10/11 each with most bookmakers and this probably indicates it is worth steering clear of the goal line here. Both teams to score is 11/10 but doesn’t really appeal to me in this game. Striker Kane Hemmings has 3 goals in his last 3 FA Cup games so if you do fancy Oxford to get on the scoresheet the 3/1 offered for him to score anytime may appeal to you. Oxford are 15/2 to win this and The Draw is 15/4 but I struggle to see past a well-structured Middlesbrough this Saturday and for me Boro to win to nil at 13/10 seems the best value.
